Tomando mate (drinking mate) is a symbol of hospitality. As the mate gourd is passed around the circle, a sense of connection emerges. The first step of the ceremony is the preparation of the gourd. Typically, the cebador/a (mate server) prepares mate for a friend or a group of friends. The cebador/a drinks the first one or two gourd-fulls, testing the water to ensure that only a smooth running mate is shared. The the gourd is refilled with water and passed counter-clockwise with the bombilla (straw-filter) facing the recipient. Each person drinks the entire gourd, “you share the vessel, not the liquid”. The recipient of the gourd has as much time as needed to finish the gourd-full. After the last few sips of the mate are gone, the gourd is returned with the bombilla facing the cebador/a. The gourd is refilled with hot water and follows around the circle, continuing in this fashion until the mate is lavado (flat). If someone has had enough mate, they simply say gracias (thank you) to indicate that they are finished.

Guayaki (gwy-uh-kee) Yerba Mate (yer-bah mah-tay) is made from the naturally caffeinated and nourishing leaves of the celebrated South American rainforest holly tree llex paraguariensis. For centuries, South American’s Ache Guayaki tribe have sipped yerba mate daily for its powerful rejuvenative effects.

How to Brew Yerba Mate

French Press: Place yerba mate in the French press. Add hot water and steep for 3-10 minutes. Add ~1.5 tsp loose mate per serving, adjust to desired strength. First, moisten the mate with cool water to protect the nutrients and flavor, then add hot water.

Coffee Maker:

Place yerba mate in filter basket, then brew. We recommend using ~1.5 tsp loose mate per serving, adjust to desired strength. First, moisten the mate with cool water to protect the nutrients and flavor, then run the machine as usual.

Keurig Machine:

Place yerba mate in a re-useable filter basket, then brew. We recommend using ~1.5 tsp loose mate per serving, adjust to desired strength.

Espresso Maker:

Yerba mate brews well in most espresso makers. Place ~1.5 tsp loose mate in a double espresso portafilter, adjust to desired strength. Pull a long shot for a total of 4 oz. Great for making mate lattes.

Mate Latte Recipe:

Brew an 8 oz. cup of Guayaki Yerba Mate. Add sweetener (sugar, honey, or maple syrup) to taste and 4 oz. of steamed milk of choice. Top off with milk foam. Makes a 12 oz. latte.

Traditional Mate Gourd:

Yerba mate is traditionally prepared in a gourd and shared among a circle of friends. Welcome the moments of community born of your own mate circle.
